Quand il était petit, Han Gan adorait dessiner. Il aimait par-dessus tout dessiner des chevaux, et toujours il voulait qu’ils aient l’air le plus vivant possible. Il était si doué que l’Empereur entendit parler de lui, et le fit entrer à l’Académie des peintres officiels. Mais là, Han Gan ne voulut peindre que des chevaux, et toujours attachés. Quand ses collègues lui demandèrent pourquoi, il répondit que ses chevaux étaient si vivants qu’ils pourraient sortir du papier. Une nuit, un valeureux guerrier vint frapper à la porte de Han Gan. Il lui dit que le pays était en danger, qu’il devait partir se battre demain, et lui demanda de faire apparaître pour lui le plus fougueux et le plus vaillant des coursiers. Han Gan se mit au travail… Il ne savait pas encore qu’il allait donner vie cette nuit-là à un cheval invincible, au caractère noble et indomptable..
